At Belonging Pioneers, we are passionate about acknowledging and understanding the use of privilege and its power to overcome barriers to success.
This fundraiser is a perfect opportunity for you to explore what privilege looks like in the world around us, reflect on what that means for you, and use this experience to raise awareness and funds for The Lord Mayor's Appeal and our community charity for Earthquake Survivors in Morocco
About the charities: We are beyond distraught that the peaceful, scenic village of Ouirgane in the high Atlas Mountains in Morocco has been decimated by the recent earthquake. We have got to know and love this village and its people through our Heartfulness Retreats, and have formed close bonds with our hosts and other people who live in the village.
There is a very special charity in Ouirgane - the Association Tamounte - that supports single mothers and orphans. This charity is now providing support for earthquake survivors and their families in Ouirgane while they continue to capacity build their region. We are working with them to deliver short and medium term assistance. They are one of two chosen charities for Balancing The Scales 2024.
The other charity we are supporting this year, is the Lord Mayor’s Appeal, which aims is to create A Better City for All – one that is inclusive, healthy, skilled and fair. This year, the appeal is Balancing The Scales of ableist, socio-economic and education based relative privilege. These strategic aims match perfectly with what Belonging Pioneers stand for, and that is why they are the other charity we are fund raising for this year.

About our Research: Many people are angered by others’ use of privilege and entitlement, to take actions to suit themselves. The cry of ‘it’s one rule for them and another for the rest of us’ is a key indicator that the destructive nature of privilege is at work. There is a lack of quantifiable data on the use and impact of privilege and this survey is an important action that aims to capture accurate and representative insights into the use of privilege. It gathers a wide range of perspectives – whether someone finds the use of privilege unacceptable, harmless, or even the right of certain people. The Privilege Conundrum Survey findings will prepare the way for greater consciousness and cultural awareness of privilege and the creation of fairer, safer and more inclusive workplaces. You will find our survey at: http://bit.ly/PrivilegeResearch
Here's what people said on LinkedIn after attending Balancing The Scales 2023 - and why you can't afford to miss BTS2024:
I am so glad that I attended the Balancing the Scales event hosted by Ishreen Bradley - Belonging Pioneers on the UN World Day of Social Justice. The event was a thought-provoking discussion about the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace, and how we can all work together to create a more equitable future for everyone. The speakers were incredibly knowledgeable and shared valuable insights that I will take with me. I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn and connect with like-minded individuals who are also passionate about creating a more just and inclusive society. Thank you, Belonging Pioneers, for organizing such a meaningful event, and for all the amazing work you do to promote belonging and inclusion in the workplace. I look forward to continuing the conversation and taking action to make a positive difference in the world.

A very thought provoking event discussing the concept of ‘Relative Privilege’ The concept of privilege is often viewed as negative, but it is a fact that we all have relative privilege based on many factors. Embracing this and being open to learning about the experiences of others is a positive attitude we all should take that will ultimately create a better environment for everyone both in the workplace and outside.

A hugely memorable evening as we mark the United Nations World Day of Social Justice hashtag#BalancingTheScales with Belonging Pioneers and NatWest Group A powerful presentation from Anil Soni, CEO of World Health Organization Foundation on relative privilege. “Be inquisitive and understand better the lived experience of others but do not judge and open your eyes to unfairness and injustices” The amazing Tammy Banks 💜🧡 was next with her powerful and truly inspiring journey “embrace privilege to help and enable others to give them hope” just like a wonderful teacher gave her hope when she needed it most. It was fabulous to hear from Samuel King his new poem “All fingers are not the same”.

I was invited to ‘Balancing the Scales’, Ishreen Bradley's event for Belonging Pioneers. The event explored the importance of social justice and the link between social justice and privilege. The speakers dissected privilege and identified where it shows up. It’s clear, privilege is on display everywhere, not just on Downing Street. To assess the relative privilege of its attendees, the event had a warm-up exercise. Two steps forward if your parents went to university, you went to private school, your biological family comprises of professionals, Doctors, Lawyers etc, you grew up with the expectation of going to university, you grew up with comfortable finances, and so on. If these statements were not relevant to you, take two steps back. I arrived at the back of the room with one other person. Yet I have many privileges, I’m a white person living in the UK. Until I moved to London and mixed in circles drawn differently, I had no reason to question my background. This exercise highlighted how in terms of social class, social mobility remains a significant and long-standing problem in terms of accessing top jobs in London, revealing again that it is still dominated by those from affluent social, cultural or economic origins (often all three).Last night demonstrated that I may be an outlier in my career path.Ishreen and her team would like more people to take part in the UK-wide survey The Privilege Conundrum Survey. You can also learn more by listening to The Privilege Eruption Podcast on Apple. We all need to keep doing the difficult work to close these gaps. Opportunity isn’t universal, and those who don’t have it are likely to be as unaware as those in denial.
